About

Jonas Urba represents employees and small businesses. He thinks that makes him more objective in how he views any employment dispute or damage assessment. Some clients want objectivity. Others do not.

Effective and honest communication is the key to objectivity. If that initial phone conference with your employment law attorney is strained those conversations may not improve. And if you, employee or small business, need long-term representation switching lawyers often costs more.

Not even the best lawyers can accurately predict timelines for resolving issues. Attorneys do not control the courts. Private attorneys do not run administrative agencies. And lawyers do not control opposing parties nor the lawyers who represent those parties. Neither we nor our clients have all the facts from both sides. We are fact gatherers, legal researchers, persuasive drafters of position statements, letters, and pleadings. When all else fails we argue motions, attempt resolution, and litigate when necessary.

Both litigation and mediation are team efforts. Neither one can be done without combined efforts by lawyers and clients. Facts matter. Documents often contain relevant facts. And those documents win or lose cases more times than not.

The same applies at work. Whether you perform phlebotomist duties or handle union card-carrying steelworker jobs, paper documents before electronic record-keeping were and continue to be critically important.

The same held true when Jonas earned his MBA. Organizational behavior demanded records and documents. Employee motives were often captured in emails, personnel evaluations, and other documents. They helped fuel Jonas ongoing interest in employment law.

Labor and employment law led Jonas to earn his certification as a civil court mediator two decades ago. He still believes in alternative dispute resolution as do many judges and ALJs. But early resolution depends on both sides believing in the process and that depends on other lawyers and opposing clients.

We rarely accept, at face value, everything opposing lawyers or clients tell us but at the same time Jonas Urba will not sugarcoat your employment law claim or defense. You will hear candid evaluations from him. That does not mean that those evaluations will not change with time and newly discovered facts.

Strong facts belong in solid demand letters. But those are not the only opportunities for resolution. Skilled counsel pay attention to every opportunity to learn new facts. Those facts can facilitate case resolution. Other times litigation is the only choice.

But before litigation becomes the only choice, clients need to buy-into their counsel’s approximate or ranges for valuing cases. Facts and research are the best means to estimate outcomes.

Jonas’ representation of both employees and small businesses helps him explain how the other side views employment disputes. That gives his clients a realistic view of employment law disputes.

Whether you’re an employee or employer, most people are not looking for media attention nor do they want to spend years or even decades in court. Jonas tries to provide common sense solutions to complicated problems.

He also knows that contingent fee agreements are super popular. Yet many potential clients don’t realize that those types of fee arrangements require strong facts. And it’s rare for clients to have great documents or photographic memories of facts.

That makes flat fee arrangements attractive for some matters. Businesses want to know what a filing or a project will cost. Jonas has extensive knowledge of flat fee pricing.

Tarrytown and Westchester County are competitive. The legal landscape changes daily. Caselaw precedent seems to evolve faster every year. That means your employment lawyer must stay on top of New York’s employment law changes. Jonas does just that.

More employees and small businesses are using AI to locate top legal representation. Everyone is incorporating some aspects of that into their practices. Some faster than others. Even before AI potential clients called Jonas from upstate or western New York. He usually asked why they called. Some didn’t trust local attorneys or felt that small communities where everyone knew one another was not what they wanted. Yet others were looking for employment law experts. Ethics guardrails prohibit calling ourselves experts in legal fields with few exceptions. Client reviews are probably the best way to measure competence, skill, and knowledge.

Jonas Urba devotes his law practice exclusively to employment law and employment litigation. The Urba Law Firm which became Urba Law PLLC was founded by Jonas Urba in New York in 2014. The firm’s goal is to provide the best possible employment law results based on each client’s individual needs by zealously advocating for every client and by dedicating whatever time, research, and discovery is necessary for the best outcome.
